Installer starts up on insert object

Word's been working fine until yesterday afternoon when it started opening
the windows installer every time I try to insert an object into a document
(I'd been able to do this for the few hours previously). Now if I try to
open a graphpad prism file that I've copied some data from into another one
that I've inserted, the windows installer starts up repeatedly. Likewise if
I try to open an excel file it does the same thing. When I cancel the
installer it comes up with error 1706. Eventually the files do open, and I
can eventually insert new objects, but the installer starts up repeatedly
before I can.

I've run a virus scan and it says the machine's clear. Any idea what's
going on?

Are you logged on with an Administrator account? If you don't have
permission to update certain files then the Installer will continue trying.
If not, make sure you have Administrator privileges and allow the Installer
to run.

But why has it started all of a sudden? I'd already inserted around 4 excel files and 4 prism files into this particular document before it started doing this.

Which is why I suggested the Installer cleanup utility. Have you tried it?
Once the installed is sorted, you will then be able to open Word (as
Administrator) and let the installer do its stuff and it shouldn't bother
you again.

I can't tell you that. I'd have to be watching everything you were doing and
what the computer was doing in the background to even have an idea. ;-)

What I do know is if you don't have Administrative privileges on the user
account the Windows Installer is unable to permanently write the information
it needs and if it can't it will keep trying.

My experiance with the Windows Installer Cleanup utility is it was designed
for sorting out Office installation problems with the Office Setup,. For
example when using Add/Remove features, or if the Windows Installer runs, it
reports it can't find the source installation and it fails to run. The issue
lies in the Windows Installer entries in the Registry.

Based on Ellies description it doesn't sound like this is the problem. I
noted she clicked Cancel when the Installer came up and encountered an error
but that's normal behavior.
