Installing Microsoft Office XP Standard

M

Mike

I just purchased Microsoft Office XP Standard for
Students and Teachers. I have two computers; one with
Windows 98 and one with Windows XP Small Business
Edition.

If I install this new software on either machine will
it erase or overwrite all of my data which presently
exists in Word, Outlook, Excel, and my other
programs ??

I purchased the new software because my daughter
needs the Power Point program and the computer with the
Small Business Edition did not have Power Point loaded on
it when I bought the computer 18 months ago. I would
prefer to load it onto the newer computer because it is a
much more powerful machine.

Someone told me that I could individually load only
the Power Point program and not have to worry about the
other programs. Is this true?

Please advise. Thank you.

When you run setup, read the screens very carefully. It will uninstall
previous versions of the software if you let it, but it won't delete your
data files. Read the End User License Agreement carefully. You can
probably only install the software on one system. If you are concerned
about the data, it is always smart to back it up to a CD or some other
media.

Installing the new version shouldn't erase your *data* files (word
documents, excel spreadsheets, etc.), but it depends on where you stored
them.

If you mean will it delete the existing programs, well, it could, again
depending on how you choose to install.

The person who said you can load PPT individually is correct. To do this
-- or even to install the other programs without wiping out your
existing ones -- put in the install CDs and use Custom Installation. You
can then choose what to install (or not) and to keep your existing
applications (or not). I'd suggest installing to a different folder,
especially if you opt to keep your existing applications.
