Help. I just bought a new computer that uses Windows XL
and has MS Works 2003 (my old computer died). I am trying
to put Office 2000 Professional (upgrade) on the new
system and it says "Error 1608. Could not find any
previously install compliant products on the machine for
installing the product" Is it possible to get it to
recognize the newer versions so it can install? I really
need the powerpoint and access. Thanks for the assistance.

Most likely you have deleted the MS Works components. You
state that you have Windows XL??? did you mean XP? If so,
I believe that Office 2000 can not be installed under XP.
Please check with your supplier.

I believe George may not be correct on this one. Office 2000 *is* compatible
with Windows XP (assuming that's what you've got) (his link is to an
information page that pre-dates the existence of any XPs). I think the
problem is that you have an O2000 *upgrade* edition, which is looking for
previous versions of Office or other eligible programs. It may not know how
to look for the current version of Works--in fact, I don't know if the
current Works even is eligible for such an upgrade.
You'll probably, regrettably, have to call Microsoft

Alternatively, if you have an older version of Works around, install that,
then try to install Office 2000. That might well do the trick. T

Thanks for the information. I do have Windows XP and the
Office 2000 is an upgrade version. It seems like it
should be compatible if I can get it to recognize a newer
version. Will try giving Microsoft a call. Thanks LLL
