Is it possible to install Office 2003 on a system with OfficeXP and have
them both functional or will they "trip" over each other?

Trip = Yes. I recommend using a VMware or VPC session for alternate Office
installs, especially since it will let you use other versions of Outlook,
which installs on the same partition will not.
