installing Office upgrade on top of Works

I purchased a Compac laptop on 1997 & installed an upgrade
version of Microsoft Office Professional on top of the
version of Microsoft Works that came bundled with the
recovery disk for the laptop. Now I have a new desktop,
also Compac Presario and the Office 97 Professional will
not install on top of the version of Microsoft Works that
comes bundled with the recovery disk with the desktop.

Since the Microsoft Works that came with the laptop is
not separate from the recovery disk, I cannot install the
older version of Works that came with the laptop on the
new desktop. I do not know what would happen if I tried
installing the laptop recovery disk on the desktop.

I am happy with Office 97 and should be able to continue
to use it on the new desktop and not have to throw it out
and buy a newer version of Office.

Is there a workaround for this problem? I am sure many
ran into this problem.

Hi, Michael,

When prompted for the qualifying software, does it work if you simply insert
the recovery disk from your previous installation (instead of installing it,
which--as you noted--you can't do)?
