Can you do this in microsoft office word 2003? I tried wordart but I
dont seem to know what I am doing (none of the styles matching ther
interlocking design) and I can seem to place them together.
Thanks

I'm not certain what you mean by "interlocking characters".

Some fonts include what are referred to as *ligatures* whereby certain
character pairs are connected to one another, such as fl or fi. However,
that effect is designed into the font & you can't really induce it
effectively in Word.

OTOH, if you're looking to move characters closer together you can select
the text & go to Format>Font - Character Spacing, select Condensed from the
Spacing list & set the amount in .05 point increments. This *might* render
the desired result, but can also result in an eyesore if overdone:)

thank you for the information. The desired effect is something like NY
interlocking like the Yankees.
Can you tell me the name of the font that has that effect already
existing? Or perhaps it doesnt exist.
I think it can be done adobe illustrator but I dont know how to do
that either.

Yes, there are any number of programs that offer this kind of capability,
but they're either font design programs, graphics design programs, or more
sophisticated layout programs with advanced typography features.

In Word you have basically two options - either of which should work if this
is just for the purpose of effect & involves only a few characters. Neither
of which, however, are particularly precise or "professional":)

The first way is the Character Spacing feature I mentioned in my previous
post. Select the two characters & set the spacing to whatever necessary to
get the effect you wish. Which font you use doesn't make much difference -
there will still be a fair amount of trial & error involved.

Alternatively, you could use WordArt to create the characters as a graphic,
then select & copy the WordArt object, use Edit>Paste Special - Picture.
Rt-Click the resulting picture & choose Edit Picture. It will then have to
be UnGrouped & modified.
