I would like to know if there is a way to get notified when you get mail on
outlook?

Try:
TOOLS, OPTIONS, under PREFERENCES tab select EMAIL OPTIONS, ADVANCED
EMAIL OPTIONS

This will only notify you when your Outlook is open and running on your
desktop. If you are looking for alerts outside of Outlook - it
depends on where you want to be notified.
