Is there a way to grade size or color of bars in a gantt chart?

I'm trying to customize a Microsoft Project 2003 gantt chart. The individual
I'm working with is extremely visual and would like me to change the bar
characteristics based on several things. He wants me to grade colors (as he
has color coded different requirements) on a single bar, or have different
colors on opposite sides of a split task. Similarly he would like to change
the bar style for different sides of a split task. Is this even possible?

You can change bar styles using custom fields and flags to a certain extent,
but coloring the different parts of a split task is not something easy to do
(I'm pretty sure that it is possible using some visual basic though - but
would be much more work than necessary)

Details on how to do the conditional formatting can be found here:

Although some what off the subject, you may want to consider the addition of
progress lines to your tasks as well. This way, as the task moves towards
completion there is an automated visual indicator of progress on the Gantt.
