OFFICE: XP

Recently upgraded office from 2000 to XP.
All existing word and excel docs are saved as shortcuts in
a journal entry. When I deleted all the journal entries
and reopened a few of the docs they re-saved as shortcuts
in a journal entry.
New documents created since XP installed do not save in
journal entries.

Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
