Keep a unicode character from going bold?

A

Alexander

Here's my situation: I'm trying to type up a chess-related text in
Word. Typical chess formatting will have the players' actual moves in
boldface text, and possible variations in normal text. I instert the
minitature symbols for "king", "queen" etc. with 2654, Alt-X, etc.,
because they're regular unicode characters.

The problem is, these symbols look crappy when they're printed out in
boldface, so I want them in normal text and the text around them in
bold. However, I've typed about three pages already and it's driving
me insane switching between bold text and regular text every five
seconds. Is there a way to "force" these symbols to be inserted
without bold formatting, even if that's what I'm typing in?

And along these lines: I'm typing the document in Times New Roman, but
these symbols can only be displayed on my computer in MS Mincho. What
I've been doing is typing an entire line (or paragraph) then
highlighting it all and switching to TNR (this makes the text go, but
keeps the symbols as they are). As before, is there a way I can insert
the symbols, but keep TNR as the current font?

Thanks,
Alex
