Kernel32 error message

I keep getting the following message when I open one
particular document file in Word (Office 2000 on Windows
98). Ever other file is fine, just one important one
causes the crash and all my backups have the same problem.

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff8836d.

Any suggestions on how I might be able to open and modify
this file without it crashing my system.
