Large email causing Outlook to freeze

Hi,

I'm using Outlook 2003/Windows XP on a Dell laptop.

What happened and what I tried to do:

Last time I was able to run Outlook, "send/receive" ran and started
downloading emails, the first one with an attachment.
The counter that shows how large the message is, ran to 5mb out of 10mb and
then froze, the rest of the emails did not download.
The Task Manager showed Outlook as "Not Responding" so I restarted it.
The email message in question now shows in the inbox as 10mb but Outlook is
frozen but the message content doesn't show in the preview pane. By frozen I
mean that I can't click on any messages or buttons and the Task Manager shows
in the application tab that Outlook as not responding (it's showing up twice
there).
I closed Outlook from the Processes tab of the Task Manager and tried again
but Outlook opened and froze again. The 10mb message is still in the inbox
but not showing a preview and nothing else in Outlook is responding.
I closed Outlook again and rebooted the computer. I had the Task Manager
open while starting Outlook, and it showed it as almost immediately "Not
Responding".
I went to my ISPs webmail interface and deleted all the messages that hadn't
downloaded plus the 10mb one but Outlook is still freezing up.

My question:
Is there any way to delete the 10mb message from outside the actual
application?
Any other suggestions?

Thank you,
Amalia

Try starting Outlook in safe mode. (Start > run > outlook.exe /safe > ok
button)

Outside of that, watch for security products (antivirus) that can scan
e-mail as it is sent/received. Some of these products cause Outlook fits
and need to be configured correctly. (e.g. exclude the PST from real-time
scanning, disable/don't install the ability to scan e-mail since it easier
to save attachment to file system first and then scan it w/ your av of
choice.)

Thank yo u! That worked flawlessly. I deleted the large email and then was
able to run Outlook regularly.
Thanks again - I really appreciate it

Amalia,
In bottom right corner of Outlook 2003 you will see a small icon indicating
activity ie Sending etc Click on this and a box will give you the option to
cancer send and receive.
You can then block the sender in Tools->Message rules or Delete the message
in message rules.
Good luck.
