Leveling extends task duration but not assignment duration

I have a problem with leveling (using 2003 Pro). Some tasks after leveling
increase in duration, but not because the resources assignments have been
leveled. The assignments durations are unchanged; the start of the
assignments commence at the start of the task, but the assignement finish is
less than the task finish. In fact the duration of the assignments have not
changed, just the overall task duration has increased with no increase in the
assignement durations. Thus, dots are depicted in the gantt bars on those
tasks in question. Why does the leveling operation do this? Just a
thought... may be it is because some successor task wrere leveled and the
predecessor are somehow picking up some slack? This is odd! Any thoughts on
this would be appreciated.

Leveling can perform two actions:

1) Create splits in task assignments
2) Delay assignments

Sounds like your system is performing as designed. Keep in mind that
duration = the number of business days required to complete. Does this help
you understand what you are seeing?

Unfortunately, it is not as that simple. Perhaps a clarification...

The tasks in question have 2 or more assignments whose start and finish are
all the same before leveling.

After leveling, only the task finish (ie., via task duration) has been
extended. Albiet a new start for all; the assignment starts are the same as
the task start. The assignement durations and work values are exaclty as
they were before leveing (not delayed, etc). The only difference is that the
task duration gets stretched, but not by any of its assignment. It is as if
the successor tasks pull and stretch their predeccessors' finish when they
themselves get leveled so as not to leave any gaps between tasks.
