Cannot change Task Duration

J

Jim Zeeb

I have an MsProject 2003 schedule. There is a Fixed Duration task that has a
Finish that is showing 3 months late. When I try to change the duration from
316d to 253d, it will not change.

All the resource assignments for this task are showing a Finish of 6/25/10,
but the Task Finish is showing 9/24/10. Since this is a Fixed Duration task,
I need to change the duration to 253d instead of 316d to bring the Task
finish back to 6/25/10 to match the resource assignments finish. The task
has NO constraints (ASAP).

The task has an Actual Start, so the predecessor is not driving it. There
is NO Actual Finish and it is showing as 20% complete. The last actual work
was as of 10/2/09.

I've tried changing the Finish date instead of the duration and it won't let
me change that either.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Hi,

I could guess: is there a FF relationship from an other task, is it as
ummary task, is leveling set to automatic...?
But I guess you better send me the file so that I can have a look:

Jim,
As Jan D suggested, you may have dependency on this task from other tasks
even though you do not have constraint on this task. You can check the
Predecessor or Successor of this task to find out dependency. If no
dependency caused this problem, you can try to set the task back to Fixed
Work or Fixed Unit first and reset the end date (careful about the 'share'
work as work hrs may change), then change the task back to Fixed Duration.
My recollection is that Fixed Duration would not automatically reflect the
latest completion date of all the assigned resources under this task, but
Fixed Work or Fixed Unit should. Gook luck!

Jim,
If none of the above fixed your problem, I've had success doing the
following: Change the Duration to 1d, then slowly move it back up...
