Linking Project and Excel

Is it possible to link data from the Details Style pane (in Task/Resource
Usage View) to Excel? I'm looking to maintain a spreadsheet of the Work,
ACWP, BCWS, & BCWP that links to the Task/Resource Usage views, so when an
update occurs, the linked file is updated as well. I'm using project 2002.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I have used OLE in the Task views (i.e., Entry form Summary data)
successfully via "Ctrl-C" and "Paste Special | Paste Link | Text" in Excel.
The key is to open the MS Project plans you are copying data from in "update"
mode, and Save the plan(s) after creating the "links" in Excel, as their is
data for the OLE links in both MS Project and Excel that must be saved.

Good luck :)!

Don,
I've tried the two methods you described, but neither seems to work. Each
time I attempt to use paste special in Excel, the paste link option is grayed
out (non-selectable), so it's not letting me link at all. Is it just that
Project will not allow you to link the data on the right hand pane (typically
the yellow area on the right of the screen) in Task/Resource Usage views?

Hi Chris,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

No, you can't link the timescaled data in the yellow cells :( You can only
link the data in the tables (the left side of the view).

Incidentally, although the links will work, they are very fragile links and
the concensus of this group it to not use them as they can easily become
corrupt leading to problems later on.

It might be possible to write some vba code, and if this sounds attractive,
try posting on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project
Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information
can be seen at this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi,

As for the possibillity of VBA development mentioned by Mike, I think he
meant to point you to the developer newsgroup rather than the server
newsgroup.
