links from Word doc to ppt file not working?

Hello,

I am finding that when I make a link within a Word doc to a ppt file
on my hard disk the ppt file is loaded into PowerPoint (2003) and at
the top I see

Microsoft PowerPoint - [PowerPoint Slide Show - [<name of ppt file>]]

and I have to scroll down to see the different slides - I cannot click
or press enter key to move from slide to slide as I would if I loaded
this ppt file directly into PowerPoint.

and then when I Package for CD (onto the hard disk) - the link to the
ppt file does not work at all!

I must be missing the obvious here?!

Cheers

It's apparently loaded the PPT as a slide show rather than as a PPT.

Steve,

Don't I want it to be loaded as a slide show? I mean I want the ppt
file to load and run as a slide show when clicking on the screen with
the mouse or pressing the enter key brings up text etc and moves on to
the next slide ...
Try including your own navigation buttons on the slide master(s) so you have a
way to navigate.

Not sure what you mean?
Packing for CD fixes links *from* the PPT file being packaged *to* other files.
As far as I know, it's blissfully unaware of links in other files (e.g. your
Word file) that point *to* the PPT file in question.

yes - I guess you must be right.

You might also want to experiment with adding a link like so:

Insert, Object, Create from file.
Browse to your PPT file and select it.
Put a check next to Link.

Steve,

Thanks for this idea. In fact better for me is to use the Display as
icon option and this does then play the ppt file correctly as a Slide
Show!

Why ever won't the control/k creation of the hyperlink do the same?!

One problem still - when I Package for CD (on my hard disk) the link
from the Word doc to the ppt file works but it is finding the ppt in
its original location not from the folder created by Package for CD.
The ppt has not been copied.

So, I will have to Package for CD and then create the icons from the
Word doc files when they are in the Package for CD folder ... All the
ppt files will be there anyway in the "real" process, copied as part
of the Package for CD process. I am just using a test area at the
moment and have not been copying all the ppt files as part of this
Package for CD process.

Package for CD examines the document being packaged, ie, the one that's
currently open, and copies it plus linked files to the target folder.

You have no files linked from your PPT file. You have files linked from the
Word doc but as there's no Package for CD for Word, there's nothing to examine
the Word doc for linked files and copy same.

Assuming you have links to other files from the PPT file that's linked from or
embedded into the Word file, I'd think so.

Thanks Steve.

Cheers
