Here are a couple of ideas. There's many ways to status a schedule.
Insert the Finish and %Complete fields (or %WorkComplete or Physical%Complete.
Click on the Auto Filter Icon to turn on Autofiltering, it is next to the
drop box that says "All Tasks." On the "finish" column, click the drop down,
select custom and set it to "Less than" and key in today's date. On the
%Complete column, do the same thing except specify less than 100%. This will
give you all task with a finish before now that are not done.
Filter the Start date column to be less than today, and %Complete not equal
to 100%. This will tell you work in process. If you want unstarted tasks,
filter on 0%Complete.
There is a filter in the filter drop down that will show all incomplete
tasks. You can use that in conjunction with start/finish filters. Usig the
incomplete tasks filter includes all future work as well.
You can insert the Status column and it will tell you "Late", "On Schedule"
"Complete" or "Future Task" .... you can then filter on that column as you
please.
You can get fancier with the same items on the Resource Usage view,
filtering for a resource name as well.
