List Sorting

Hi,

I have 2 questions on how to use Excel to do some cross
referencing of lists. I really hope it's possible, would
definitely make my life easier. Here's what I need to be
able to do:

1. One list is simply a long column of various entries, may
of the entries are duplicates. I need to come up with a
way to have Excel tell me how many of each item are in the
list. For example, if the word dog is in the list 33 times
and cat in the list 21 times, it will tell me that somehow...

2. I have 2 tables, table 1 has 2 colums of entries, table
2 has only 1 column of entries. Some of Table 2's entries
will also be found in the 2nd column of table 1. When
there is a match, I need Excel to return the corresponding
entry from column 1 of table 1 and to compile those in a
list. If this is confusing perhaps I can email the 2 lists
to someone and it will be easier to explain.

I very much appreciate any help with these problems!

One question per post, please. Answer to #1:

=COUNTIF(A:A,"dog")

Frank,

What you sent me doesnt exactly do the trick but I believe
it is close. I dont know if it's appropriate on this list
to say this but I feel the task I need done would be much
easier to explain if I could email or post the Excel files
somehow to describe the problem. Is that possible?

COUNTIF will give you the counts. VLOOKUP will tell you if an item from one
list can be found in another list.
