In short, ListNum fields provide a way to insert ordinary
paragraph/outline numbering anywhere in a paragraph, which could
sometimes be useful.

Since ListNum and outline numbering are linked, you can use the fact
that ListNum allows for restarts to restart style-based numbering (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ListRestartByLISTNUM.htm).
