I have just got into web designin an have set up a
website for sports that we run in the school using
frontpage 2002.

I want to be able to upload live score from the school.

How do i upload the score as they happen and have the
page refresh automatically every x seconds.

Any help would b greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Now this sounds like a cool project.

Its good to reach for the stars but I think you may be compelled
to come back down to earth. Achieving the goal as you imagine,
that is -- doing it right 'live' in real time -- would require a scoreboard
with a wireless network connection.

A human operator collecting and re-entering the data manually into a
PDA as it is displayed on the scoreboard by the officials would be the
next likely point of discussion.

By which process do the officials enter the score themselves these days?
When I was in school they were hard wired to a data entry console.
All analog of course. Is it possible to integrate with the process
the officials are using?

Thanks for the reply.

The scoreboard at the ground is still updated manually :)

What i really want to do is display the live scores on my
website and not on the ground scoreboard.

I carry my laptop to the ground with a mobile internet
conectivity, i want to b able to use the stuff and upload
the scores as they happen so that people get scores as
they happen in real time.

Any help would b appreciated

Thanks

If the online site is running the FP Serer Extensions,
- open it live and edit the scores page after each score change (and save) during the game
If not, edit your local copy and Publish changed pages after each score change

I thought of doing that, but if there is a tennis match
going on, updating the game score by editing the webpage
and publishing it might just take too much time.

I was looking at opening a java appelet and have the live
scores update in that appalet window, or something like
that where i would get a small input box that would
automatically send the scores the min. i press send.

I even thought having a scrolling text box that would
update from a text file, but then refesing that scroll
becomes a problem.. I want something that looks like a
scoreboard rather than a scrollin textbox..

Thanks for the input mate..

Forget Java
Hook up a web cam looking at the match, or just the score board, and set your page to auto refresh

Good news. Here's why...

Stefan's suggestion to use manual data entry by using FrontPage
to publish saves to the web right from within the editor is a hack
compared to what could be accomplished using other means.

This hack can get the job done though so what of it? Let's
throw in some #include directives to trim some time out of editing
the scores and make it easier to respond to the 'what if there was a
tennis match and we're pressed for time' objection.

The inference that a tennis match moves too rapidly to capture
a score that could be sent to the web server via FrontPage can be
managed using a separate include file to edit the scores as they
occur. Let's call this #include file game1.asp. All the game1.asp file
needs to contain is the following lines of text...

<!-- START: REPORTED SCORES -->
<%
Dim game1Team1
game1Team1 = "XX"
Dim game1Team2
game1Team2 = "YY"
%>
<!-- END: REPORTED SCORES -->

See? No clutter to slow you down with scrolling or whatever.
The latency involved in using FrontPage to publish to the web
is not going to be resolved and you have no other useful technology
at your disposal so you have to go with what you got and this
tutorial I am providing is going to be about as good as it gets.

As you watch a game or a match in progress you edit the
value of XX or YY to indicate the score for each competor in
game1.asp. Use FrontPage to publish game1.asp to the website.
Shazam! Seconds later you have an updated site.

A different .asp file on the web server will #include the scores from
the game1.asp file and display the scores each time someone requests
that 'other' .asp file which may be default.asp or whatever 'other'
file you choose.

So, on the web server that 'other' file that is used to display the
scores of the game. Let's say that 'other' page is actually default.asp
that loads as the home page where scores are prominently displayed.

In default.asp you would use some code such as...

<!-- START: SCORE DISPLAY -->
<!--#include virtual="game1.asp" -->
<%
Response.Write "Team 1 score is: " & game1Team1 & "<br />"
Response.Write "Team 2 score is: " & game1Team2 & "<br />"
%>
<!-- END: SCORE DISPLAY -->

Note: get into the habit of documenting your code with start and
end comments.

This approach allows you to publish scores from multiple games
by adding to the game1.asp file or by using keeping multiple
game2.asp, game3.asp files open in FrontPage. I think you can
handle figuring that out. If you need to learn more about #include
files use this...

Google: "include directive"+"asp"

Finally, you should not have to pay the ISP to use the JET database
(Acess) because Microsoft does not require licensing fees. An ISP has
to charge for MS SQL to cover costs of licensing fees for SQL Server.
You don't even need a database for this project -- yet -- but if and
when you do you'll find there is a lot more to learn.

<!-- START: REPORTED SCORES -->
<%
Dim game1Team1
game1Team1 = "XX"
Dim game1Team2
game1Team2 = "YY"
%>
<!-- END: REPORTED SCORES -->

<!-- START: SCORE DISPLAY -->
<!--#include virtual="game1.asp" -->
<%
Response.Write "Team 1 score is: " & game1Team1
& said:
Response.Write "Team 2 score is: " & game1Team2
& said:
%>
<!-- END: SCORE DISPLAY -->

HI Clinton

I created the 2 asp files as mentioned by you but i think
my service provider does not allow me to use asp cause i
get the following error "HTTP 500 internal server error".
Could it because i have not got a DB activated on the
server, do i need to have access to access or mysql?

Hi Max,

Simply create a ASP page that updates a flat file that is displayed by
another ASP page that reads and refreshes on a timed interval. The page
that does the refresh can then use an iframe to allow for the changing of
the score.

See the example I created at
http://www.websunlimited.com/samples/showscore.htm

to update the scores use the page at

http://www.websunlimited.com/samples/updatescore.asp

The code used is to update the score file is:

<%
if request.servervariables("REQUEST_METHOD") = "POST" then
'
' Open and write to the file
'
dim oFSO
dim oTextFile

set oFSO = server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
if IsObject(oFSO) then
set oTextFile =
oFSO.CreateTextFile("c:\mywebhostcompany\samples\scores.txt",true,false)
oTextFile.WriteLine "Team A [ " & request.form("scoreA") & " ] Team B [ "
& request.form("scoreB") & " ]"
oTextFile.Close
response.write "Update Successful"
else
response.write "Unable to create FSO"
end if
else
response.write "Update NOT successful "
end if
%>

It is placed above the head of the page.

Thanks for the response.

how do u get the page to refresh automatically every x
sec?

Is there a way of resizing the window to the same size as
the score scroll?

Thanks

Hi Mike

Thanks a million for your help. Looks like your
suggestion will work best for me.

Can i display the result from the form in a table?

I will have the name of the players as well as scores
from 5 games that will have to be displayed. Putting the
scores in tables will make them easier to read.

Thanks
