Locked documents

I can open documents but once they're open I can't do
anything at all with them. All I get is amessage at the
bottom of the screen saying, 'This command is not
available because the document is locked for edit'. I
can't open new documents either, and I can't copy. So
when I say I can't do anything with them, I mean exactly
that. I really hope someone out there can help me with
this. Thanks.
