When I open a shared network file, on one pc, and someone already has it
opened, it opens as read only, it gives no warning or message that someone
else has it locked or that it is read only, the only way to tell it is read
only is that there is a note on the top of the screen saying it is read only.
We used to get a message that someone had the file opened and the file would
open as read only. It also used to give the persons logon name.
We have this problem primarily with word files and I don't think it is a
problem with rights management (if no one has the file open it opens as a
writable copy). It appears to be limited to very few people (could be only
one). The file server (where file is stored) gets the message that the file
is locked and who it is locked by. It looks like the problem is a setting on
the one pc, They have the problem on either win 2000 or xp (it is a dual boot
machine using office 2002). The server is win 2000.
