lost folders and contents

I use Outlook Express on Windows XP. Last night, when shutting down the
computer, OE asked if I wanted to compress the folders to save disk space. I
said yes, since there had never been a problem doing so before. Then the blue
screen came on, saying the computer was dumping physical memory to disk. When
I restarted the computer, OE's inbox had no contents, and a couple of special
folders I had set up were gone. Other folders, like Inbox and Deleted Items
were there. Inbox empty, Deleted items had everything it should. I tried a
system restore. It did nothing, not that I thought it would since it promises
not to change saved documents like e-mail anyway. Are my email folders and
docs still somewhere on my computer? How can I put everything back the way it
was?

If you have a complete system backup you can try to restore that. If
not, try to ask in an Outlook Express newsgroup such as
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general or
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.ie6_outlookexpress
