Macro Sending Information to a VB Application

How do write a macro to send information to an VB application?

For example, it'd be great if a user could a selection in Word, start a
macro, and send the selected text to a VB application for additional
processing?

Thanks but I want to send text from a Word document to an independently
running .exe file (in this case VB-base, if that matters).
