Mail could not be received at this time

I get this wonderful message from Entourage every few months.

Currently it's for an e mail account that has been working fine for several
weeks without issue.

I go to the advanced settings and uncheck to require authentication. No
luck.

I'm out of ideas, I've never licked this permanently yet.

Strangely, it seems through tests, I send and receive fine in practice
actually, but when I click that send/receive button, this always come up
know, so it's the Entourage super nuisance. A billion dollars for the cure
to this.

It could be an ISP issue. If you use one of the network tools you might get
a better handle on the exact cause of the problem.

Test your network with tcpflow. See directions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that does the same thing but has a
different interface.

EavesDrop....Let it capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of
text in the main window to see more detail.

Sorry Diane, that is all just going to make my head explode.

Don't you think it's just one of the setting the advanced sections of the
pop account is not checked correctly?

Can't have that. :)

Since it's intermittent, the settings should not be the problem or it would
be a constant problem. If you use the network applications to monitor you
might be able to get the into to use with your ISP to help correct the
problem. It's not as difficult as it seems.

It's not intermittent, every time hit send and receive I get this notice,
it's just nuisance though. I deleted the account and recreated it, but did
not help.

Sorry, it seemed from your description "I get this wonderful message from
Entourage every few months." that the problem was intermittent.

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Using tcpflow would be your best bet at finding the culprit.

Here are the short and simple instructions on using tcpflow:

1. Download the Mac OS X version here (freeware).

cpflow-0.20.dmg.gz>

2. When you install, you will not find a tcpflow window, nor an icon on
your dock. tcpflow is designed to work in the background.

3. To run the test for email, quit all other applications that might be
connecting to the internet like your browser, ftp client.

4. Copy/paste in this command in the Terminal or use the script ²tcpflow
activate² (see below):

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

5. Now try to send an email and watch the traffic in the window of the
Terminal. You should see what is happening.

6. For an example see this page:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html#example>

Script to activate tcpflow:

Download this script and place it in your User's Script folder.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/tcpflow activate.zip>

Place the script here:

Users --> Library --> Script folder

If you activate the Script Menu in the Finder you can easily access the
script there. To activate the Script menu, go to your Applications folder in
the Finder. Select the AppleScript folder and open AppleScript Utility. ˆ
Show Script Menu in menu bar

Select the script to automatically start the Terminal with the correct
command. Enter your password and tcpflow will be activated. Next use
Entourage to send a test message.

Using the script makes it easy to use tcpflow for subsequent testing.

Solved by re-entering the password from the HOST's site.
