Mail downloading as "opened"

I have Outlook 2002. I just set up a user account on a new computer and
the mail has rules sending it to the individual folders. When I
download the mail it goes to the specified folders, but doesn't remain
unopened, so I don't know when there is new mail. All my mail is being
"opened" when downloading. How do I correct this?
