Mail Merge Question

Is there a way to have a merge field on a Template but have it hidden?

I want to be able to perform the merge from the main doc to the target doc
and have the data there and available but not visble.

i am writing a program that performs a merge to a target doc and then splits
the target docs into separate files. i need to be able have the each fax
number from the merge somehow associated with the corresponding file.

i have the prgram written and tested except for that part.
