if a field is empty how do i tell word to insert another
field.

ex. if {contact_name} is empty How do i insert
{business_name}

You should start a new thread for a new question - not simply tack on to the
end of an existing one. Your messages are likely to be overlooked.

As for your question, you need a conditional field - entered by hand using
CTRL+F9 to set each pair of field brackets {}

{IF {Mergefield Contact_Name} <> "" "{Mergefield Contact_Name}" "{Mergefield
Business_Name}"}

ie if contact name is not empty use contact name, otherwise use business
name.

or

{IF {Mergefield Contact_Name} = "" "{Business_Name}"}

which is more literally what you asked for.

Ah, OK, that makes sense. That will happen in my newsreader if I
have messages for the group with the same subject. Can be awfully
confusing...
