Mail sending time lapse

This hasn't happen to me before.

Whenever I send a message, the progress window will show connecting to mail
server and this will stay on for at least 15 seconds instead of sending the
mail IMMEDIATELY as before. May I know why the time lapse? Is it my mail
server or Entourage's preferences? This didn¹t happen when I'm retrieving
mails.

Any inputs are appreciated. Thanks!
