Make a page a css template

W

wet-inc

Hi Dick,
you don't really turn a web page into a CSS template - although it can be
done!
The best option is to re-create the page making use of CSS.
The next question to ask is do you use tables or go the whole hog an have
table less desighn?
Table for me are perfectly acceptable and are much more simple to work with.
This will give you an idea of how a page looks with no style
http://wet-inc.co.uk/templates/zen/zenbear.htm
and this link will show you what can be done with a little CSS.

Thanks Jim,
I did not phrase my question very well ( mainly because I don't know enough
about the subject). What I would like to do is this. I have a multiple page
website with lots of tables, and several Swish movies and banners. It is all
HTML. I want to keep it about as it is but (convert?) it to css to make it
easier to manage in the future. I have a very limited knowledge of css at
this time, so if you can help please assume that I am completely ignorant .
The site in question is http://www.fumcwl.org if that helps.

M

Murray

The only way to do this would be to fix the "very limited knowledge of css"
part. Then you would replace your page's 'infrastructure' (e.g., tables)
with CSS layout methods. It will still be all HTML when you finish, but all
of the 'presentation' will be in the CSS, and the HTML will only have
'content'.

But - FP has no "Simple" button you can press (like Staples does). This
would have to come from your new understanding of CSS.

Now for the bad news. CSS will make little sense to you without a solid
understanding of HTML.

D

Dick

Thanks Murray,
To clarify. I have studied html and I wrote my first web site with the help
of an html editor. All my present sites have been done with FP2003 tweaking
the html in code view when necessary. Would one of the stye sheet editors
available on line allow me to make the change over to css for my "fumcwl"
site? I have also worked through the MS tutorial about css , read a lot about
it and think I have a pretty good understanding of what css is supposed to
do. Now I need to know how to take the pages in the present site and make
style sheets for them. I could re-design the site just keeping the text and
features of the present site if easier.

FP will do that, BUT, you will have to know what you are doing no matter
what you use.

A CSS editor will let you create a CSS stylesheet. But a CSS stylesheet
contains no "presentation". You still need an HTML page to express the
style rules in the stylesheet.

The very best way to do this would be to mentally figure out how you are
going to lay the page out with CSS, start a new page, add a container to the
new page, copy content from the old page and paste it into the container in
the new page, and style it as needed. Rinse, lather, and repeat until you
have built the new page.

TopStyle Lite (freebie)...TopStyle Pro (the pay-for version) - very good.
Bradsoft.com I think.

Sure - but they only do what you tell them to. There is no 'button' that
will do it for you.

Dick, just some thoughts from another perspective. Somehow, a lot of people
seem to have begun to think that building sites with no tables for layout,
and only CSS positioning, is just one more little skill they need to learn
along the way. Actually, it's a complicated subject, and takes most people
at least several months of concentrated study to master enough to put
together *all kinds* of layouts as easily as you can with tables.

Don't get me wrong: it's a good direction to go. But it will take some
serious time to learn.

Thanks P@tty, I beleive you and have started down that path since receiving
all the replys from every one. At 83 I figure I still have time to learn
another trick or two, so thanks to you all for your helpful advice. I'll be
back with more question you can bet.

Maybe I'll give up tables for layout when I'm 83 too. :-D

Let's see, you will be using FP 2060, and I won't be asking anymore dumb
questions. Thanks again for your help.
