Make Clipart Transparent

I am using Publisher 2002, and I have been trying to make some clipart
transparent, so I can place it under text, as a background. I have used the
"washout" feature, but it doesn't work that well, plus, it keeps the color.
I need the images to be greyscale, so they will xerox true, but you can't do
greyscale and washout. The feature for choosing a transparent color doesn't
work with clipart, so that doesn't help me at all.

You can do both if you go through the steps twice.

Grayscale:
Right click the clip / Format Picture / Picture tab /
Color drop window / Grayscale / OK.

Washout:
Right click the clip / Format Picture / Picture tab /
Color drop window / Washout / OK.

If the preset Washout is too light...try going to...
Format Picture / Picture tab and manually adjust
the Brightness and Contrast.
