Managing the link between PowerPoint and Excel

I have a problem: I have a PowerPoint presentation with linked Excel charts.
Until now, whenever I had both the presentation and the corresponding Excel
sheet open, the links would automatically update to the new filename whenever
I saved the Excel sheet under a new name.

No longer. And I don't understand why and I don't know what to do.

Could it be because I moved both files (while closed) into a new folder? The
link between the two still exist, though: when I make changes in the Excel
sheets they correctly the PowerPoint presentation correctly.

As I need to work with multiple versions of the source Excel sheet, being
able to 'Save As' with the links updating correctly is pretty important.

What do I need to do?

Henrik,
The link function works differently in various version of PPT and XL.
Any I wouldn't recommend renaming files after the links are
established even if in the same folders.
