Master Plan

Hi guys

I have created an overall master plan and with 6 different streams:

Service
Training
Operations
Data
Finance
Warranty

Each of the above I have created a single task in the master plan and
then asked the stream leaders to create their individual plans and
then linked their plan to mine. This is so it helps when they ever
change their plan, mine is automatically updated.

There are 6 key milestones, which I have input into my overall plan,
and each of the streams has to ensure that they adhere to the key
milestones in my master plan. My question is can this filer down to
their plan from mine or do thay have to insert the milestones into
their individual plans?

There are also dependencies in between stream plans as well, how can
these be linked?

Sorry these questions maybe a bit basic, but I am new to this and
trying to learn as I go alon

Thanks

Hi Muddypaws ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You need to insert their plans into your master. To learn how to do this,
why not have a look at my series on Microsoft Project in the TechTrax ezine,
particularly #17 & 18, at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMFrame.asp?CMD=ArticleSearch&AUTH=23
(Perhaps you'd care to rate the articles before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Muddypaws,
Here is what I suggest. Create a template that contains the "stream"
(boy that's an interesting term) structure and all pertinent milestones.
Then have each leader create their individual detail plans based on the
template. After all the individual files are created, then you can
insert those into your master.

If you want more flexibility on the milestones, you can put those into
your master but you will need to link them to each of the individual
subproject files (i.e. "stream" files). Speaking of links between files,
what you want to use is external dependencies. There are various ways to
set them up but one of the most convenient is to open the master where
all subproject will be shown and then click and drag from the center of
the source task in one subproject to the start of the dependent task in
the other subproject. Filtering the desired tasks can make this process
easier if they are not both located within a single screen view.
