Master Plans

We are using the "Insert Projects" in MS Project 2003 Pro Edition to create
master plans, e.g., we create a blank plan, and then insert three projects
into it. Will the master plan create any problems for the subordinate plans?
I know we are prompted to save the subordinates on exit from the master but
as long as we select "No", I think we're okay?

PK,
If your intent is for display or reporting only, having the master is
the best way to do what you want. Master plans with inserted subprojects
are really pretty robust as long as you do not try to move the files
around multiple times (e.g. save to different folders for backup), or
try to create a plethora of forward and backward links between the
files. I've seen both, and it can get pretty messy.

Hope this helps.

John, thanks for the quick reply - sounds like we can do this without any
problems.

When opening the Master Project consider opening it as read only. This way
you can avoid changes to the underlying "originals"

Thanks for the reply. Is there any problem doing this with MS Project Server
2003?

Hi PK Consulting,

As far as I know, earlier versions of Project Server do not like Master
Projects. Project 2007 is supposed to be OK. If you're using a server,
please post on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project
Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information
can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm
