Master project calendar

Using Project 2003, I want to consolidate a number of projects into a
master project for overview purposes. Each project has different
calendar/work hours.

As I see it the master calendar dictates at the top level and therefore
effects the “apparent” duration for a task in a subproject if the two
calendars vary? This will obviously not match the original subproject data.

Hi,

AFAIK the "master" is just a shell containing links to the inserted projects
and its calendar is unknown to those.

Jan, So why if my Master plan has a 7 hr day (both Tools/option/Calendar
and Proj Calendar) and the inserted Project has a 8 hour day. And
subproject has a 5 day task it appears as 5.71 days in the Master?

I can see 40/7 = 5.71 which the master project is doing??

Hi,

Sorry, I didn't reply to your question, so I was right but that was not very
relevant :)
The working time calendar and all calculation issues are those from the
inserted project; but indeed the definition of "a day" is taken from the
options of the master file; so your project mauy well show 1,14 days as the
duration of a task and still plan it from 8:00 to 17:00 the same day if that
is how it's planned in teh inserted file.
If you show duration in hours (Tools, Macro, Format_Duration) both Gantt
views become identical.
Hope this helps,

Jan - you know what sponsors are like! they'll say "I WANT both my sub
project view in days and master in days - why should I deal with two
different formats? - I think and 'work' in days"

Because the master isn't simply a container for the sub project in that
it at least effects the way a "day" is presented - am I correct that the
above request is not possible??

Hi,

Give me a little time to think about this and try some.
It must be possible through customized fields

Hi Gerard,

OK, tete, here it is.
In one of the subs customize a text field with the following formula:

CStr([Duration]/[MinutesPerDay]) & " d"

Through Tools, Organizer, Copy the field to all the other subs.

In the master, show this field and give it the title "Duration".
(The MinutesPerDay function useds teh value form theh sub not from the
master)

Jan - thank you for sticking with me - your solution will be very useful
in the future.
