Materials scheduling

Hello,

Is there any way within project manager to schedule material purchases &
deliveries, and also help with expediting?

I think not, but if not, does anyone know of another tool that would be
better for us?

We build yachts, so there is a definite need for a project plan for the
tasks/resources/tracking etc, but material purchases are also critical - they
need to be planned very carefully with the project timeline.

Your help/comments would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Project has the capability to track material resources as far as there
use within the project. Unless the professional version has additional
capabilities, it doesn't really track the procurement process in any
detail. Names, addresses, phone numbers of vendors would have to be
tracked separately. There is software out there to track these types of
relationships, like Goldmine, Commence and others. Some of them require
a bit of setting up. I've used Commence to run my consulting business
for years. One of these would probably work for you.
May I ask what yacht company you work for? I have done some sailing,
both here, in Colorado (not the best sailing in the world) and in Fla
and the Carribbean. It's my passion. Am going to Costa Rica next
winter, hoping to do some sailing there. Do you sail?

Hi Dave,

I work for GARCIA in Condé sur Noireau (la belle France), I have never
sailed, but it looks likely that I might get a go soon as we're undergoing
sea trials with a 90' at the moment - it's great fun here, not only am I
having to learn a whole new (nautical) language, but in French!

It's the same with Microsoft project too - that's all in French (doesn't
make life any easier).

I don't need Project to hold names addresses phone numbers etc, but rather
to 'schedule' the fact that the motor needs to be ordered at a certain lead
time, remind me to chase it etc - I know I could put it as a task, but there
are a lot of items to order for a boat and I could do with a bit of a bill of
materials for the tasks (main purchases for the cabins, deck, rigging, etc).

Do you have web addresses for Goldmine or Commence?

Thanks

Right now my travel schedule is pretty much limited to home/work here
in Denver. Would love to tour a French boatyard! And to see Normandy
(unless an invasion is in progress)! Love those places, as long as I
don't have to live in them (lived in a boatyard in Ft Lauderdale for 2
weeks some years back). Hope all goes well with your project.
