Maximum text length in a cell

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Could-it be possible the maximum text length is now limited in a text cell.

I have a lot of Excel 2004 files with cell with long text writen in it.

I was able (using 2004 Excel) to view, print with no problem but it is impossible to exceed these limits in 2008 version :

Display text cell : maximum 255 characters
Print text cell : maximum 226 characters

When maximun is reached, "XXXXXXX..." are displayed instead of the text on screen and it is not printing (but the space normaly use by the text area is).

I would like to know if this is a new limitation in Excel 2008 or a bug that will be fixed in a future patch.

If this is a new limitation, then why it is not working for both (display and print) using the same limits ?

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you, but I can confirm that the Limits
& Specifications for Excel 2008 are identical in this regard to those of
Excel 2004: 32,767 characters per cell capable of displaying all in the
Formula Bar but only 1,024 in the cell. AFAIK there is no preference setting
that would change that.

Can you provide more specific detail about your OS & Office versions, Mac
specs any anything additional you can share about the files themselves. Odd
as it may seem, also check to see if there may be an update available for
your printer driver.

I am seeing some unexpected behavior in what I've been playing with but want
to test further before commenting. I hope to be able to do so later this
evening or tomorrow.

If a cell displays "XXXX" (I think you really mean "####") this means that
the column width is not large enough to display the result of a formula.
What is the actual text in that column, and how is it derived?

OFFICE 2008 (Excel 12.0.1) French

Yes it is "####" instead of "XXXXX" that are displayed on the screen. But this behavior is only happening when I change the Cell format from "Standard" to 'Text".

The printer driver is the latest I could find from the manufacturer Web Site.

Cell Format (for text) are :
Standard,
Top - Left - Wrap mode (of course)
Geneva - Normal - 9 - Color automatic
No border (only the one in printing format)
No background color
Unlocked cell

Text is directly entered in the cell

If necessary, I can arrange the file to be available from a ftp site

What is the text? Is the cell wide enough for the first word and a space
character? Does it show #### in normal view, or just print preview? Try
updating to SP1 to see if that makes a difference.
