Merge Fields no longer fields?

Hi All,

I have a number of letters which had heaps of merge fields which seem to
have all been converted back to standard text with the switch from Word 2000
to Word 2003. In other words, they are no longer fields and no longer map
back to the data source. They are straght 'body' text and do not get the
grey shadow/background when you click on them, nor can you 'toggle field
codes' when you right click them....

Can anyone shed any light as to why this is the case?

I've opened many merge documents created in Word 2000 in Word 2003 and
haven't encountered this. How are you opening the files? Are you using
File/Open? If so, did you verify the file type is "Word Document"?
