Merged cells break across page, even though table set to not break

In a table used to compare pairs of entries, the fifth column is
merged vertically. The whole table is set to not allow rows to break
across pages. The merhged cells are still allowed to break.

Apparently, Word seems to have forgotten that these cells are no
longer separate.

Is there any way to fix this so that page breaks cannot split the
merged cells either?

Format the unmerged cells (all but the last row) as "Keep with next." See

Yep, I should have thought of that. In my case, I have another column
where the cells are not merged. I was able to set keep for the first
row of each set to avoid the keep problem on the last row.

Interesting side effect if the table has a header that is set to
repeat. When the table gets to the point where the header + first row
will not fit on the table, the row moved to the enxt page leaving a
header with no body on the previous page. The header is also repeated
on the next page.

Don't ya just love this Rube Goldberg contraption and the jury-rigged
work-arounds we come up with?

Well, what do you expect Word to do? You can't put 10 lbs. of stuff in a
five-pound sack.

If the 10 lbs of stuff is the merged cell and the 5-lb sack is the
space left on the page and I've told Word not to split up the sack, I
expect it to do what I told it to do -- put the ENTIRE sack on the
next page -- not split it up.

Seems pretty simple to me.

Isn't that what you said it did--split the row off from the heading row?
