Message disappears after reply

I don't know why this started happening but here's the
scenario:

I receive a message in my inbox. I open it up. Read it.
Reply to it. And then when I close the original message, I
see it is gone from the Inbox. It's not in the deleted
items folder either.

Is there an option that is deleting it? I can't seem to
put my finger on it. I can see it being taken away from
the Inbox when I close the message, but don't know where
it's going.

View-Current View and uncheck "Unread Messages"

Looked there already and it wasn't checked. 'Messages' was
checked. He can view read messages, but only when he
replies and closes the email does it disappear.
