Microsoft Word + Excel 2003 - very slow to open..

Recently I am having major issues with Word and Excel 2003, when I
have a document on my desktop and I double click a file, it takes
30/40 seconds for the file to open. However when I open word - and
select the file to open it opens in seconds. I get the same issue
when I get an email with an attachment its taking ages to open.

PLEASE can someone give me some suggestions.
