Microsoft word is locked. I cannot type a new document. Why?

when i open a new document to begin typing it will not let me type and all i
get at the bottom of the screen is 'This modification is not allowed because
the document is locked'. Who locked it? Most of the task bar icons are
inaccessible as well so i cannot follow out the instructions when i go
through the help menu. It is not a sub folder either just an ordinary
spanking new word document. i Have dead lines and am panicing some what. i
hope you can help me.

If you have a trial version of Office 2003, then maybe the trial
period has expired.
