Migrating to New Project Server

Keith Hodes

Hi. We are building a new server and plan to move our
Project Server over to it. Logistically, I want to make
sure I'm going about this correctly, and any feedback you
may have is appreciated.

I plan on reinstalling SQL2000 w/ Analysis Services; IIS;
Project Server; and STS.

I will back up our existing Projects Database and the
Repository, and the STS database.

Can I install Project Server as a new install and then
just restore the databases? Or restore the databases
after installing SQL2000, and install Project Server using
the existing database option.

Has anyone done this? It took quite some time to
successfully implement Project Server, Project Pro and
STS - many headaches, many weekends of troubleshooting,
many reinstalls. All finally works well and I hope all
will go smoothly on the new server.

Thanks in advance.

My recommendation is a clean install all around. There
are some 129 HTML files that have information hard coded
in them. I believe there are other files that are on the
actual physical box that MS doesn't tell us about. All I
can tell you is that every time we tried to put the
pieces back together it failed. Even MS suggests taking
a complete image of the server hard drive instead of
trying to restore the database.

My 2 cents worth.

Keith:

Despite Kevin's horror story, this can be done. I suggest that you get a
copy of my new book, Implementing Enterprise Portfolio Management using
Microsoft Project Server 2002, now in-stock at your favorite bookseller or
from the link below my name. I cover what you need to know in the chapter on
Advanced Installation Techniques.
