Missing .MSP Files

A

Allistair

I have Office 2003 Pro Upgrade and XP Pro, When I try to check for updates
it tells me that I am missing the above files (or other problems 1-4 below
not 1 or 2 though) I have installed and run both AVG and spybot as I did
have a virus could those have deleted the file if I used them incorrectly,
also I reinstalled an older version of office by mistake and then carried
out a system restore, any ideas how I can restore them? System restore has
been tried but does not work.

Thanks
Allistair

Fault details below
The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

a.. 1.You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
b.. 2.There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the
Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page
and try running detection again.
c.. 3.Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied
Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on
your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update
operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office
updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of
the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for
assistance.
d.. 4.You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from
Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more
information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install
Source if Unavailable.
Note 4 above has been tried but Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for
Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millenniium Edition , Windows Installer
2.0 Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 but does not seem
applicable to my software.

Additional Info, If Itry to reinstall Office 2003 it tells me "the patch
package could not be opened. verify that it exists and that you can access
it or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package."

Found this in an older newsgroup letter and it also worked for me without
screwing anything else up. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS IN CAPITALS FIRST!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\<Product code number
that refers to Office 2003>\Patchesold

By golly gee it really works. Here is how.
Open Start
-Run
Type in run "Regedit" without the quotes
-Edit type in "Patches" without the quotes
When the first Patches shows up right click on it and
-rename "patchesold"
-F3 key finds the next one. Keep doing this until all are
renamed.
ONLY DO KEYS (left side of screen) that say PATCHES DO
NOT DO APPPATCHES.
Close regedit
Go to Office update and by golly it updates.

About time.

Thanks again

I am having the same problem with Office XP. I had to reinstall it, I tried
to reinstall my service packs and I get the same error message you did.
Also I can not get a successful scan from Microsoft's Office update page. I
get an error .

Can you let me know where you found information for this fix? Thanks

Lou
