most of my icons on the desktop have changed their appearance and now look
the same all have W logo and will not allow me to open the program they are
covering I can go in to some programs using home page. when I do get a
program open they all have Norton anti virus logo on them, I have run a virus
check nothing found.

I had the same (or similar) problem. If you download a free utility called
TWEAKUI, there is an option in that program to repair icons. It worked just
fine for me. There are also a lot of other handy utilities with TweakUI that
you might like as well.

The other alternative I had tried was to go to each icon, right click,
choose Properties, and "change icon". Tedious, but it worked.
