Moving and installing Office 2003 to a new partition question

W

William Low

I have a hard drive divided into 3 partitions (C:, D:, E:). Most of the main
stuff is on D: (meaning Windows XP and Office XP, etc.) (C: is for a dual
boot of Win ME).

I want to move Office XP to the E: to make more room on the D:, but I also
plan to upgrade to Office 2003.

Will the installation of Office 2003 know enough (if I give it the new
destination drive letter of E:) to cleanly remove Office XP from D: and move
my data to E: as it installs Office 2003, or does one have to uninstall
Office XP from, in this case, D: and *reinstall* it on E: and then install
Office 2003 on top of that on the E:?

Thanks.

Will,

You will need to reinstall Office XP on E drive under WinME and under Windows XP. When you do this, make sure you select the same folder/Path under both systems on E-drive so that you don't waste unnecessary hard-disk space.

The reason you need to reinstall is because Windows has to re-register all the DLLs etc and make appropriate Registry entries. It is a simple process but this has to be done systematically. Moving files only may not work properly and you may get crashes when using Office.
