MS Outlook 2003

I moved from using Outlook Express to MS Outlook 2003. I have the account set up, but I still can't get any mail sent to me to go in my Inbox. The only way I found so far to receive mail, is to go in tools-send/receive all.When I click this, it brings all my mail to the inbox from wherevever it detours to. I know this is not the only way to retrieve mail using MS Outlook 2003. There is something wrong and I don't know what it is. Can someone assist me with this issue please.

do you have automatic mail checks enabled in tools, send/receive, define
send/receive?
