MS Project 2007, Outline Level Data Issue

L

louckst

I'm working with a .MPP file about 10MB. Whenever I use the fomatting
toolbar > Show Outline Levels (e.g. Level 3) several of the task names at
various levels are deleted or disappear.

I've tested this on 2 machines and with different verisons of the same .MPP
file.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the Outline Level function on the
toolbar or any potential file/performance issues.

Louckst,

A long shot, but 10mb sounds like quite a big file size and this might
be a sign of data corruption, as is disappearing tasks. Did this file
start life in MSP 2003 as this causes lots of data problems (I've
found).

Try inserting the schedule into a new file (insert, project) and then
unchecking the "link to file" check box. Save the new file and see if
this reduces the file size any.

Hi louckst,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I was going to suggest that you install Service Pack 1 for Project 2007, but
SP2 was released today, so I recommend you download that first. If your
problem is not cured, please post back.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

The service pack 2 appears to correct the outline issue.

The "new file, insert project" reduced the size from 10, 248kb to 9,617kb.
The Master Plan has over 6,000 task lines. Technically one might say it
contains multiple 'subprojects'.

If interested, the next challenge I'm wrestling with is the fact the plan is
not baselined and I've been asked to compare versions of the plan. The
"Compare Project Versions" add-in cannot process all 6,000 lines with my
2.5GB RAM. Keeps freezing up when comparing the Entry table between 2 plans.
Option1 - I've tried to slice the .MPP down by summary tasks without
breaking dependencies and then running 2 versions through compare versions
add in. Option2 - I thought about baselining a version and then importing or
adding the tasks/updates (seem like a lot of work).

Thanks for all the help. Tim L.
