MS Project 2k3 Won't Open Any Files!

I have uninstalled, cleaned the registry, and reinstalled three times
now on my desktop. The end result is the same. I can't open any
existing 2003 files and it gives me the following error: "This file was
created by a newer version of Microsoft Project and a converter is
needed to opern it. Do you wnat to download the converter from
Microsoft Office Web site?" When I create a new project and save it, it
gives me the same error. Which is total nonsense! I have tried saving
a file to an earlier version with my laptop but get the same error.
Project will not open any files in any supported format, even the ones
it creates itself? WTH! I have never seen anything like it. I have
all updates current and am running MS Project 2003 SP3. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. I am using my laptop which used the same
install disc with no problems. My desktop is another story?!

Hello cyiam37,

If I understand you correctly, you can open and work with files on
your laptop but not your desktop? Is this a recent problem -- you
were able to work with Project before but not now?

Are you by chance running Norton Anti-virus on your desktop with the
Office Plug-in enabled? If so, try disabling it.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for the reply!

I am running Avast Home free edition on my laptop and desktop. The
irony is, the setups (operating system and programs) are basically the
same and I have no issues with the laptop.

My desktop Project 2k3 will not open any files period. I create a new
project, put a few tasks in it, save it..and it does save with no
problems. Then exit and restart project and it won' open the file it
just saved?! I am at a loss for words here!

As I mentioned earlier, I am running the same virus software on my
laptop. I checked it's settings and I don't see anything like the
Norton issue. I will do some research on Avast and see if anyone is
having similar issues.

Thanks for the reply and I appreciate any help that is provided.

I haven't heard any other problems of late. I suggest carefully
comparing the software installed on the two machines. You may also
want to double check for virus issues on the home pc. You can run
free scans on line to check for problems with virus.

Is your desktop unit running some corporate wide software that the
laptop is not? I assume you have activated the desktop software as
well.
