MS PRoject formatting

R

Raj

Hi,

When I copy the tasks or insert the tasks from one project to the other -
original formatting is lost. For example - if I marked a few tasks in BOLD
RED - they copy as regular black.
Any ideas in retaining the formatting

Thanks,
Raj

Raj,
Formatting is specific to a project file, not to the tasks. If you set
the same criteria for text styles in the new file as exist in the old
file, then the formatting will effectively transfer.

Hope this helps.

Raj,
In my hurry to post an answer I missed the most obvious solution
(pointed out to me by a fellow user). Formatting is specific to a view
in a project file (not just to a project as stated above). It is very
easy to then use the Organizer to transfer a customized view to another
Project file.

Sorry for the misinformation.

Thanks John for your prompt reply. We normally mark some of the tasks in RED
BOLD for immediate attention and Milestones in BLUE.

I made both projects – One I want to import/ insert and the master project
into the same view “Tracking Gantt†with format.
But, when I import/ insert the project with RED BOLD – the imported project
looses all formatting and reverts back to BLACK.

AdvThx,
Raj

Raj,
Ok, there is one more bit of information to add. Copying the view will
only preserve globally applied formatting (i.e. formatting applied via
Format/Text Styles). Formatting that is applied to individual tasks
(I.e. formatting applied via Format/Font) will not follow a view.

I do have another suggestion for individually formatted tasks.
1. Identify those tasks with a bold format using a spare flag field
(e.g. Task Flag1)
2. Do a similar thing for the tasks in red (e.g. Task Flag2)
3. Copy and paste the tasks as normal making sure to include the flag
fields
4. Once the tasks are in the new file, filter on the flags one at a time.
5. Re-format the filtered tasks by selecting all and then applying the
format

Hope this helps.

Flagging is good. you can set up bar styles using Normal, Flag1 and
Normal,Flag2 etc but it is still tedious, gets ugly, has a limited pay-off.
Three words of advice concerning individual bar and especially individual
font formatting: "Don't do it".
Four more words "or you'll be sorry"

Raj,
You're welcome. Sorry it took a couple of tries.

If enough users ask for a particular feature it has a better chance of
getting incorporated into a future version of Project. However, as far
as I can remember, there haven't been many posts with issues similar to
yours.

Trevor,
I do agree that manually formatting individual tasks can be tedious,
(although the method I described streamlines the process considerably),
but I do NOT agree that it shouldn't be done. Is there some bad thing
that will happen (e.g. file corruption, unexpected results, etc.) if
users apply individual formatting? If so, please share with the rest of
us.
